Pergola A pergola is simply an outdoor room without walls. Pergolas are currently a hot item with many homeowners. They can also be described as an overblown arbor or a structure usually consisting of parallel colonnades supporting an open roof of girders and cross rafters. The Random House dictionary defines a pergola as an "arbor formed of horizontal trelliswork supported on columns or posts over which vines or other plants are trained." Some people prefer not to have the plants climbing and want their pergola as just a plain open cover over their patio. Pergolas are not strictly for the back yard but can be on the front of the house or garage. |
