Granny Dumping

granny dumping, n. the abandonment of an elderly person, esp. a relative, at a hospital, bus station, etc. Coined in the US in the early 1990s when it was believed that elderly people were being deserted by their caregivers and left in hospitals etc. where the authorities would find them and take responsibility for them. Even though the term is rather comical the situations are very sad.
