Baidu, the Chinese equivalent of Google went public ending their first day at $122.54 a share. The leading Chinese-language Internet search provider ranks No. 2 in China and No 6 in the world in Web traffic. Baidu built its traffic mostly through word-of-mouth and the so-called Baidu Union. Over 76,000 third-party websites have put the Baidu search box on their pages. They are reported to have indexed 690 million web pages, 80 million image files and 10 million multimedia files. They are also offering news, message boards and other content.

Baidu's most popular feature is its support for multimedia search, called "MP3 Search" and its Baidu 500 is a comprehensive listing of popular Chinese music. The rankings are based on download numbers. It can locate file formats such as MP3, WMA and SWF. The multimedia search feature is mainly used in searches for Chinese pop music.
