Pop Goes The Culture!
This website is loosely based on what's hot with today's Pop Culture so I thought I had better know what Pop Culture is. After thinking about it for a few minutes I determined that I really didn't know exactly what Pop Culture really is. And after searching the Internet I found that most others are having a hard time coming up with a single definition of Pop Culture. Here's my theory of Pop Culture.
The term Pop Culture seems to have sprung up in the psychedelic sixties. Beatnik writers and alternative artists began to write and paint unconventionally. Thus, sprang the term Pop Art. Pop Art took objects from our everyday culture and turned them into appealing, eye opening artistic designs. It fused everyday life with fun expression and created a new art form that broke from the boundaries established by the old guard. From Pop Art came Pop Culture. Pop Culture is ultimately youth inspired and deviates from the more conservative mainstream culture.
Icons that were normally staunch politicians and news figures slowly have become movie stars and Pop Stars. New products, ideas and symbols that change the long established idealism of the past quickly become a part of our Pop Culture. So in a sense, Pop Culture is something new and innovative that sparks a following and leads large numbers of people to turn away from their own traditional culture towards a more popular, less defined culture.
Because of it's association with artists and writers, Pop Culture has become synonymous with music, writing, entertainment, television, movies and the things associated with each. Pop Culture is not based on long held traditions and the past but gets it's roots from what is created each new day that effects, inspires and moves a new generation.
Pop Culture is defined by each society and each era. It is constantly changing and evolving. What is Pop Culture today will soon be nostalgia tomorrow. So what is Pop Culture?
To me, Pop Culture is defined as the popular influences of today that will effect how large groups of people will look, act and think tomorrow.
